More Air 10 Months ago
Can the 2008 Corvette benefit from low restriction or ram air filters?
There are many products out there that claim horsepower increases by increasing air flow. My problem is if this is true why hasn't the factory incorporated these changes into the car? It wouldn't cost that much more and it would improve the specs for the car. This makes me think that the horsepower gains are not true. Please advise.

Roc,
You can't look at what GM (the factory) does as the final best part that is on the car. Yes you can gain performance with an aftermarket part. The reason GM does not incorporate all of these modifications on the car in the beginning is simple. They have different goals they have to meet vs. what some of the consumers have to. What I mean by this is they have requirements that they have to meet to make sure they please the majority of the buyers, the federal gov't, and of course corporate GM. In case of the air box, the engineers know what makes hp, one that is the reason why the 08 recieved the ZO6 air cleaner. They also know that it can be improved but they have to meet noise requirement and certain filtration requirements that the aftermarket does not. This does not mean that your aftermarket airbox will not filter as well as the original, it will but you have to clean it where as the original one you can go down to your dealer and get a new filter. This just quickly sums up why there are many parts out there that will increase power over stock. We started with a stock ZO6 which had 505hp, when we were done with all the bolt-on ie, exhaust, headers, air intake and some tuning, we were turning out 630hp with no change in driveability. So there is always room for imporvement, the term done, can't be any better still does not ring true to any car especially the Corvette when they leave the assembly line.
Thanks
Justin
