Jim Powell originally built this 1976 Can-Am
Corvette with Chuck Hewelett in 1982, then sold it to a new owner in 1985. Jim
lost track of the customized Corvette, then found it in 1995 in a bank parking
lot. Apparently, the car had been through a tough time because the previous
owner purchased the car while it was “chained to a post in front of a pawn
shop.” According to Powell, “It was in dire need of major body and engine work,
along with a complete interior. Since 1996, the car has undergone a custom retro (it was never stock) and made
its debut at the Effingham Fun Fest 2000.” Currently the Can-Am Corvette is
equipped with 475-horsepower stroker 383 engine, Turbo 350 automatic with
B&M converter, American Racing Torq-Thrust wheels, Goodyear F1s, and a
Vette Brakes’ suspension. Color is PPG Prowler Yellow with Dark Plumb Pearl.
“Trust me, my wife is very glad the project is finished,” Powell adds. “All she
has heard for four years is ‘Honey, I need more parts,’ ‘Did UPS run today?’
and ‘It’s almost done, trust me!’”
