That was not surprising to those who followed Corvette Racing’s off-season development and testing. After being soundly beaten last year by the Ferraris at both Le Mans and in the latter half of the ALMS season, GM Racing realized that significant advances were required if the Corvettes were to be competitive this year. They committed considerable resources to improving every area of the car’s design, switched from Goodyear to Michelin tires, and replaced half their driver lineup with new and presumably faster pilots.
All of the enhancements to the Corvettes, in concert with opposition that didn’t live up to its potential, meant that the C5-Rs were mostly running against each other for class honors at Sebring.
Johnny O’Connell, Ron Fellows, and Max Papis had plenty to celebrate at the conclusion of the 12 Hours of Sebring back in march. The trio drove to 1st in class and 4th overall behind three of Audi’s remarkable R8 prototypes.
