There were many things about the Sting Ray that made it an instant legend but if we had to choose one characteristic that can be called its defining element it would of course have to be that split running through the middle of its rear window.
Despite strenuous opposition from Zora Duntov and others within GM who felt that the impairment to rearward visibility was severe enough to be at least annoying and perhaps even a safety hazard, Chevrolet’s styling department, led by the legendary Bill Mitchell, insisted that the rear window split was essential to the car’s design and must therefore stay. The stylists held their ground and won the battle for 1963 but lost the war in ‘64, making the famous split window a one-year only feature.
In addition to the split window there are numerous other important features that made their debut in 1963. Starting that year Corvette aficionados could choose between the traditional convertible body and a genuine coupe.
