tested 0-60. We didnt even do any quarter-mile testing. Due of the
newness of the package, we havent done a whole lot of actual physical
testing other than dyno tuning." Officially, this new series is a Mallett Z06 Hammer. Lash added, "If you were to buy a Mallett 435 and upgrade to the seven-liter engine, youd get the same Hammer decals on the fenders and custom embroidered into the seat headrests. But the Z06 Hammer doesnt get the carbon fiber engine covers or the radiator shroud, that sort of stuff. It is an actual Z06 car. I could put a seven-liter engine in a convertible or coupe, but the Z06 is specific." Engine mods do not void the warranty. New car owners still get the 24 months and 24,000 miles. Mallett will also build a 2001 Z06 in the new Hammer series, in which case they will swap the 01 camshaft for the 02. Otherwise, Lash explained, "The engine gets custom ported cylinder heads and stays with the factory lightweight valves. We put our single valve spring with the damper in. That particular car had a 1.8 roller rocker arm on it, good for about 10 horsepower at top of the rpm range." Apparently, the optional rocker arms make for a slightly hotter Z06 Hammer at 6,300 rpm. Next, Mallett uses custom-made stainless steel long-tube headers with a D-port to match the exhaust ports on the custom Z06 cylinder head. Lightweight pushrods and new valve spring retainers complete the internal engine mods. Stainless steel mufflers feature dual outlets instead of the factory quads. The suspension gets a set of Mallett/Penske non-adjustable shock absorbers. The car is lowered about an inch to an inch and a half by the short shafted shocks and custom mounting hardware in the rear for the rear spring. The feature car seen here got the optional stiffer sway bars front and rear. Malletts custom billet shifter is part of the package. The optional 18-inch rims are Malletts cast alloy, one-piece wheel. They measure 9.5 inches wide in the front and 11 inches wide in the back. Lash describes the end result as, "Something special, something that none of the other Z06 guys have. The Z06 is the top-of-the-line factory unit. Then we take that and one-up them." CM.com |
