a redundancy of critical components more typically seen in aircraft. Most impressive, the engineers got enough weight out of the cars so that even heavy extras such as a second battery and a second starter motor could be carried on board without a problem.
  
As it turned out, stiff competition and oppressive heat rather than mechanical problems posed Corvette’s biggest challenge at Sebring. Ron Fellows, Johnny O’Connell, and newcomer Oliver Gavin didn’t flinch, however, enduring cockpit temperatures of 160 degrees on their way to beating a small armada of Saleens, Vipers, and Ferraris. Their #3 Corvette ran flawlessly, covering 317 laps of the 3.7-mile road circuit to place first in GTS and ninth overall among the 59-car field.
