championship he so badly wanted. Fellows went into the contest a clear favorite, one point ahead of teammate Johnny O’Connell and 11 points ahead of Saleen ace Terry Borcheller. Even if Borcheller’s car finished first in class, Fellows, O’Connell, and their co-driver Scott Pruett had only to finish fourth for Fellows to earn the GTS driver title. But it was not to be.
   
A series of relatively minor mishaps strung together ultimately resulted in Corvette #3’s disqualification. The trouble began just before qualifying when a new but defective carbon fiber driveshaft was installed. As soon as Fellows put power to the pavement, the normally super-strong driveshaft literally broke in half. Besides the driveshaft trouble, #3 also experienced an uncharacteristic engine problem that turned out to be a detonated piston.

Corvette #3 was hampered by engine, driveshaft, and electrical problems both before and during the race. It completed only two laps before breaking down and then got disqualified because crew members touched it while on track.
