show and spend a long weekend. Whereas in California there are so many other
things to do. People are going to come but they’re not going to spend the entire
weekend there. It’s a different mentality. So a big event like Bloomington or
Carlisle hasn’t established itself in California.
That being said, the most likely place for a Corvette
50th Anniversary on the west coast is the Monterey Historics, because
for Chevrolet’s 75th Anniversary in 1987, there was a lot of support
from Chevrolet and all the enthusiasts and cars. I assume this will be a big
deal for the Corvette’s 50th Anniversary in 2002. At first, my vision
was larger, with the whole place being turned over to Corvette activities. I
don’t think, in talking to Monterey’s Steve Earle, that that’s going to happen.
My assumption is that Chevrolet will want to put as
much into the 50th Anniversary as possible. I don’t think they will
wait to the end of the anniversary season - they want to get the most thrust
