For
years, Barry Long dreamed about driving his high school love, a ‘58 Corvette,
but doing it with the handling of a late-model Corvette. Let’s face it. Straight
Axles are nirvana to look at, but their handling leaves much to be desired.
So the doctor from Indianapolis didn’t hesitate to plunk
down a deposit for a hybrid C1/C4 chassis when he met Paul Newman (not the actor)
at Bloomington Gold three years ago. Newman, you may recall, was the race car
builder responsible for one of the most trend-setting Corvette customs of all
time, the awesome ‘57 (red with silver coves) featuring a tube-frame chassis
that was featured in Hot Rod and Corvette Quarterly in the early
to mid-1990s. The owner spent $300,000 on this Corvette, which also featured
a remote-controlled tilt front end, ala the clamshell design of the C4.
Paul
Newman shows off his "car creation," a C1 frame modified to accept a C4 suspension.
