team came to the race this year focused on winning class honors in spite of the formidable competition from Saleen Motorsport’s S7Rs and Chrysler’s Dodge Viper GTS-Rs.
   
No fewer than three Saleen S7R supercars and four former Le Mans winning GTS-R Vipers showed up to do battle with the Corvettes, making for an all-American GTS class contest.
   
The Vipers were not as fast as either the Saleens or Corvettes in pre-qualifying, practice, or qualifying, but that didn’t mean they could be dismissed. At Le Mans, outright speed is not as important as endurance and the Vipers have a stunning record of accomplishment over the past five years. This year’s trio of Vipers was, however, missing a crucial element that shepherded last year’s examples to victory, that being the Oreca team.
