Wanting
to build tire speed, Bill Kirchhofer wound up his LT5 to 4,000 rpm and popped
the clutch in second gear to smoke the rear tires for the burnout contest
at Beech Bend Raceway Park. With a big aluminum Be-Kool radiator, he wasnt
the least bit worried about boiling antifreeze onto the pavement. Another
secret is the 160º thermostat. After 60 seconds of tire smoking mania,
Kirchhofer revved the LT5 to 6,500 rpm for the finale. The crowd went wild
as rubber particles popped and smoked high in the air.
