Corvette ZR1 debuted in 1990, a couple of years before the Viper. The ZR1’s
horsepower numbers are strong evidence that Corvette was out to thump Dodge’s
new sports car. In ‘93, Chevrolet upped the LT5’s horsepower from 375 to 405,
just north of the 400 in the upstart Viper. ZR1 production was strong at 3,049
in 1990 and 2,044 in 1991, then slumped drastically to 502 in 1992 and 448 for
each of the last three model years - 1993, 1994, and 1995. Chevrolet finally
dropped the $31,258 LT5 option, while the Viper has lived on.
