for two more laps. And my heads-up display in the windshield finally read ‘00.’ According to the track, I was timed at 202.3 MPH.”

Is this official, we wanted to know? Weir shrugged, “It as official as it’s going to get, I imagine.”

Switching on the double zeroes admitted Weir into a rather special street-legal 200 MPH club and let him in on a secret of Corvette speedometers. They don’t read “200.” Instead, they flash a pair of zeros. At a National Corvette Museum seminar last year, a Corvette engineer asked if anyone present had hit 200 MPH in their Corvette. Weir held up his hand and told the tale. The engineer said he believed Bill because he mentioned the secret about the speedometer Flashing The Double Zero. Those in the 200 MPH Fabrication Club are apt to say their display read “200.”
