It
is odd, indeed, that a fish could be a revelation for a sports car. When Bill
Mitchell, the soon-to-be chief stylist at GM, mounted a shark he had caught
at Bimini, the blue body with white belly, turning a shimmery silver in the
afternoon light, gave him the inspiration for a new sports car. In the mid-1950's,
the styling reigns were soon to pass from Harley Earl to Mitchell, and there
would definitely be a new Corvette with a different body and chassis. First,
Mitchell created his own personal 1959 Stingray racer, paid for out of his
pocket, which was his way of getting a new, exciting Corvette to the public
eye in a matter of months.
