Marc
agreed to pay the elevated price for the car and retain Mackay’s Corvette Repair
for the restoration. When Kevin picked up the car, he drove the 100 miles to
Marietta to show the ‘66 coupe to both Johnson and Bergen. We can only imagine
their wonderment at seeing their old car again. Doug immediately recognized
the diamond plate he had installed right below the gas pedal for the heel of
his shoe.
Both Bergen and Johnson attended at the 2000 National
Corvette Museum’s Labor Day celebration where we talked about the history. Bergen,
a successful businessman, says he got the idea to go racing in 1966, ordering
a 1966 Corvette coupe with the 425-horse 427, M22 4-speed, 12-bolt Posi-traction
with 3.70:1 gears, sidepipes, and radio delete. The car was Tuxedo Black with
saddle leather interior and a teak/telescopic steering wheel.
