To understand the saga of an old race car, one must round up the usual list of suspects. With this ’66 Corvette, we’ll start with the central character, Doug Bergen, certainly not a household name, even among the Corvette cognoscenti. However, it was Doug’s idea to go racing in 1966, and when he found Bob Johnson, a 40-year-old beginning driver in his hometown of Marietta, Ohio, he discovered real driving talent. One way to think of Johnson is he was the Dr. Dick Thompson or the John Fitch of his late 1960s and mid-1970s era.
     Now enter Corvette Repair’s Kevin Mackay, who knew the names Bergen and Johnson very well after perusing old car magazines during a search for interesting Corvettes with racing history. He saw the name Bergen a lot, and discovered that Doug had campaigned three Corvettes that were driven by
