Has your L98’s get up and go got up and went? Did the soccer mom in the mini van almost blow your doors off at the light? Is your gas mileage so bad you’re propping up a Mid-East sheikdom? Well, Bunkie, it could be time for a major tune up in your Corvette. Poor performance, sluggish acceleration, decreased gas mileage and noticeable misses are all signs that point to a major tune up.
We get a lot of letters from readers who are new owners of older C4 Corvettes and want to know how if they can tune up their L98. Most of a major tune up can be done by the home mechanic and this article will show you just what you can accomplish. There are two other services that must be done by a competent repair shop and we will show you what these do and how they are performed.
Our 1986 Corvette needed a major tune up so we contacted Zip Products at (800) 962-9632, www.zip-products.com. They were able to supply everything we needed to do the job.
We’ll be doing this in two parts. Part one will handle disassembly, spark plug replacement and rebuilding of the distributor. In Part two (which will be online may 8), we’ll complete the tuneup process. Follow along as we do a supertune on our L98.
Here are the items Zip supplied to do the tune up on our 86: Spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter, air cleaner element and spark plug separators. You will also need common metric and standard hand tools and a #T-15 Torx Bit or driver. A shop manual for your year Corvette is also a must have item. If you do not have one, contact Zip. They can help.
