The #30 won the first race in the Motorola Cup at Daytona and was quickly moving to the front until an engine problem sidelined this very quick Corvette.

mph. A Dodge Viper was second fastest and Daytona winner Conway and Tonelli was third fastest in the Powell Motorsports Corvette #30. The Phoenix American Motorsports #37 Corvette driven by Hayner/Heinricy was fourth fastest and the #43 Planet Earth Motorsports Corvette driven by Joe Nonnamaker and Bill Pate was fifth fastest. Reese Cox and Marty Miller drove their #98 MTI Corvette to sixth fastest position on the grid.
Right after qualifying, the inspectors took exception to the fuel in the KAC Corvette and made them flush out their system and sent them to the back of the field as a penalty. Danny Kellermeyer explained to CorvetteMagazine.com "we had a small amount of fuel in the system left over from Daytona. We thought we got it all out, but there was some left in the bottom of the tank." John Powell met a similar fate when the inspectors took exception to the throttle body on his #30 Corvette and the officials moved his car to the back of the field. This now put the Viper on the pole, Heinricy second, Nonnamaker third and Reese Cox fifth.
