Although multiple plants began building engines for Chevrolet in 1967, this letter code will always remain as one letter. The next two digits designate the engine assembly month code. If the month code is january through september, the month code will be preceded with a "0" and still remain a two-digit code. The next two digits after the month code represent the specific day of the month the engine was assembled. It will always be a two-digit number as well. The last two letters of the engine code represent the actual engine code suffix. The engine code suffix gives the intended specific application for that engine in the model year that it was built.

Beginning in the 1960 model year and lasting through the end of the 1975 model year, the engine assembly plant code was moved to the right hand side of the pad and any vehicle identification number would be stamped on the left. This included all small block engines and all passenger car 409 engines.
