on the ground. The team determined that it came from a halfshaft boot on the rear of the car. But which one? Powell radioed both cars and told them to take it easy. Shortly after the call, the #11 car pulled off the course with a broken driveshaft. Powell told Craig Conway, car #30 to slow down because he had a one lap lead over the second place Porsche. Powell was nervous because of the driveshaft failure and the rear of the #30 car was covered with oil. So the team held their breath as they waited for the checkered flag. Finally at 5:13 the checkered flag fell and the #30 Corvette streaked across the finish line in first place. The Johnson/Pobst #08 Corvette finished tenth, the #43 Nonnamaker/Pate Corvette finished twenty-ninth, the #11 Powell/Goad finished forty-fourth and the #98 Cox/Miller Corvette finished forty-third overall.
In Victory Circle it was time to celebrate. Craig Conway and Peter Tonelli were delighted to bring a Corvette home to its first Motorola Cup victory. John Powell was beaming as he reveled in his team’s outstanding performance.
