especially for the Apollo
12 "Astro Vettes." The only differences between the three were the
emblems on the fenders. The emblems contained the initials for each astronauts
flight classification, with Commander Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr.'s
Corvette sporting a CDR script in the white portion of the emblem. Command
Module Pilot Richard Gordons car had CMD written in the red space. Lunar
Module Pilot Alan Beans Corvette had LMP written in the blue area.
Alan Beans original 1969 Astro Vette has been carefully
preserved and refurbished by Danny Reed of Austin, Texas. Reed has owned the
Vette since 1971. The car was in decent shape when he bought it, but
needed paint and some engine work. In 1991 Reed gave the car a complete freshening,
bringing it to its current condition. He rarely shows the car, although he
has made it a part of NASAs annual open house in Houston.
A serious space enthusiast (and former boat racer), Reed
owns an incredible collection of NASA-related memorabilia and can recite Apollo
12 yore in great detail. And Apollo 12 was a great mission to commemorate.
