accent grills deleted
and still having the impressions in the hood, and the louvers on the side
with those really funky hubcaps, it just wasn't real attractive looking."
Starting in 1965, four-wheel disc brakes were standard, and the 396 cid big-block
became an option. The interior was improved, and the styling cleaned up. Then
came the 427 option in '66, and the clean design of the '67. "You look at
a '64 and they look a little more pudgy, to me anyways," Mike believes. "They
are just the weak link of the whole chain of 1963 to 1967."
Yet
the fact is, the 1964 Sting Ray is a very nice car to drive. Chevrolet made
great strides in build quality, interior noise, and vibration control over
the first-year '63 Sting Ray. The optional performance engines had more power,
too, with the carbureted L76 jumping from 340hp to 365hp and the top-of-the-line
fuel-injected L84 pumped from 360hp to 375hp. "They actually drive pretty
nice," said Mike Vietro. "You get a lot of bang for the buck in those cars."
