CorvetteMagazine.com was at Putnam Park Raceway near Indianapolis, IN waiting for an unusual race to begin. Nine race-prepared Dodge Vipers and three C5 Mallett Corvettes were lining up to start a 30-minute wheel-to-wheel competition. When the green flag fell the copper Mallett Corvette jumped out into the lead and screamed down the front 1/2 mile straight at full speed. About five car lengths behind the Corvette was a Dodge Viper trying to close the gap.
Approaching 170 mph, driver Reese Cox began downshifting and setting up for the tricky turn one and two corners of this 1.7-mile road course that is demanding on brakes and suspensions. Reese downshifted with perfect precision, stabbed the brakes, applied power and was off on another lap with the Vipers in close pursuit. When the checkered flag fell, the copper Mallett finished second overall, with a silver Mallett 435 in fourth and a dark blue Mallett 435 in fifth.
