began to win races in 1956 – and many of those first most visible achievements came at Sebring and in SCCA Production-class racing.
In its first major public outing at the 1956 12 Hours of Sebring, factory-prepared Corvettes showed promise, with a modified car finishing 9th overall and a production car finishing 15th. 1957 was a different story, with factory-backed Corvettes first and second in the GT class. Then came national championships in the SCCA Production classes: C-Production in 1956, B-production in 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, and 1961. By the way, Corvette sales increased substantially each year, from a low of 700 units in 1955 to 10,939 in 1961. Did racing save the Corvette from a certain death? You bet!
